Fly Fishing Reel Proper Line Threading?

Posted on Nov 19, 2008 under Fly Fishing Reels |

I ran a cross a site that appeared to show the fly line should pass underneath (on the outside) of the line protector bar on the botom of the reel. I have always threaded my line so that it passes "inside" the bottom line protector as that seems to provide a more direct path to the first guide on the rod. So, should I feed my fly line "inside" the line protector bar, or on the "outside" of the line protector bar on the fly reel? Thanks for any help.

you have got it right. that is the only way the drag system will work properly and running it around the bottom wil cause abrasion to your fly-line and take years out of it's life.

Well, I've never seen any data on that, but I have always run my line outside the line protector because I get more control right where I'm grabbing the line and pulling….stripping line from the reel.
I don't know for sure if there's a right or wrong, but that's how I've been doing it for 30+ years.

no your right but i should think that if you were to do the other new method it wouldnt harm but thats only if you dont play the fish back on the reel

I have always passed my line on the inside. I have never had any problems there. I always end up changing my reels for left handed retrieve and find I have all the control over the line I ever need.

Passing the line inside the bottom line protector is the better of the two options as it is a direct path and reduces the chance of drag and provides a better set.

    Q. How long have you been fly fishing and with out giving away any "good oil" where's your favourite hunting ground?
